Matt Brink was an all-state performer in wrestling and football at Fruitport High School, but it’s on the mat where he reached legendary status. He was a three-time Michigan High School Athletic Association state champion at 275 pounds for the Trojans, first as a freshman in 1994, then again as a junior and finally as a senior (he finished as runner-up as a sophomore). He still remains the only wrestler in MHSAA history to be named a heavyweight champion as a ninth-grader. Brink finished his prep career with an amazing 167-2 record.
He then moved on to the University of Michigan, where he tested his skills against the best collegiate wrestlers in the country. Brink proved he belonged and then some, becoming a four-time NCAA qualifier, four-time All-Big Ten selection and two-time All-American. His final college record was 106-44. Upon graduation from Michigan, he returned to his hometown and coached wrestling at Muskegon Reeths-Puffer for 19 years, 15 as head coach. He guided the Rockets to eight conference titles, 10 district championships, and city and regional championships in his final season in 2020.
