The 2001 Roosevelt Park Little League Team is the only team in area history to win a state championship in the traditional little league 11- and 12-year-old division since the tournament began in 1957. In fact, the only other Little League team from the Muskegon area that has won a state championship in any age division was this same group of boys that won the 9- and 10-year-old title in 1999.
Roosevelt Park rolled over its four District opponents in 2001 by a combined score of 66-4, then scored wins over St. Claire, Taylor, Midland, Georgetown and Grosse Pointe to win the state championship in the small, Upper Peninsula city of Norway.
“The Park” then kept things going at the Regional tournament in Indianapolis, winning its first three games, before eventually falling to the home Indiana team in the championship game with a spot in Williamsport on the line, which was televised on ESPN2.
Team members were Chris Mattson, Andrew Carlson, David Mowers, Matt Ulfsax, Jacob Polanyi, Josh Sharpe, Scott Schuitema, Justin Judd, Jordan Bundt, Matt Callow, Troy Forton and Kyle Mattson. The team was coached by Steve Schuitema, who was assisted by Craig Bundt, Dale Carlson and Randy Forton.
